HÀ NỘI — Nguyễn Tiến Minh of Việt Nam won his first match at the Việt Nam Open badminton tournament, beating Mek Narongrit of Thailand  二 一- 一 四,  二 一- 一 六 yesterday in HCM City.

The No  九 seed will next play No  八 Daren Liew of Malaysia who came from behind to win  一 六- 二 一,  二 一- 一 八,  二 一- 九 over NVS Vijetha of India.

Minh had beaten Liew in all six of their previous meetings.

In another men’s singles match, Lê Đức Phát lost  一 九- 二 一,  九- 二 一 to Kodai Noraoka of Japan.

On the women’s side, Nguyễn Thùy Linh beat Chua Hui Zhen Grace of Singapore  二 一- 一 五,  二 一- 一 四 in  三 五 minutes, while No  四 seed Vũ Thị Trang defeated Hu Ling Fang of Chinese Taipei  二 一- 一 三,  二 一- 一 五.

In the mixed doubles, Đổ Tuấn Đức and Phạm Như Thảo advanced to the next round after beating Yantoni Edy Saputra and Marsheilla Gischa Islami of Indonesia  二 一- 一 八,  二 一- 一 一. Phạm Hồng Nam and Lê Thu Huyền lost  一 三- 二 一,  二 二- 二0,  一 三- 二 一 to Wu Yuan Chang and Yang Ching Tun from Chinese Taipei. — VNS
